Quality of Life and Wellness

Elevating Positive Mental and Environmental Outcomes.

The Quality of Life and Wellness Impact portfolio consists of programs designed to enhance the physical, mental, and environmental conditions members of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department experience while on the job. Given the intense nature of their work, our objective is to support our members through the day to day hardships related to their careers by creating opportunities that reduce burdens and produce positives outcomes to help them thrive.

Healthy Heroes

The Healthy Heroes Program empowers firefighters and first responders to actively prioritize their physical and mental wellbeing through fitness, wellness, and recovery-focused initiatives.

Designed to promote strength, endurance, mobility, injury prevention, and overall health, the program provides access to wellness resources, fitness opportunities, mental health support services, and community partnerships that encourage healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.

Recognizing the demanding physical and emotional realities of emergency response work, Healthy Heroes takes a holistic approach to firefighter wellness by supporting both the physical readiness and mental resilience of Atlanta’s firefighters and first responders.

On the physical side, the program empowers members to actively maintain their fitness and remain ready for duty by supporting strength, mobility, injury prevention, and recovery. On the mental side, the program recognizes that first responders face unique psychological challenges that require early support, consistent resources, and a culture that prioritizes mental health without stigma.

Together, these two pillars form a program built on one belief: a firefighter who is well—physically and mentally—is better equipped to serve, lead, and thrive both on and off the job.

Through proactive wellness engagement, recovery support, and expanded access to health-focused resources, the Healthy Heroes Program reflects the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the health, performance, and quality of life of those who serve and protect the City of Atlanta each day.

Infrastructure Improvement Program

Given the fact that firefighters on average spend one third of their lives at fire stations serving 24 hour shifts, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation has begun performing much needed renovations and improvement projects at fire stations across the City. The range of projects include kitchen and bathroom renovations, cancer prevention initiatives, health and firefighter safety enhancements, lighting installations, electrical upgrades, plumbing enhancements, station safety and communications improvements, HVAC and roofing inspections and more.

Successes:

Improvements to Date:

Since 2023, the Foundation has identified over 110 improvement projects that are currently in progress or complete - totaling over $2.4 million dollars expensed.

Injury and Bereavement

Due to the high risk and dangers associated with the profession of being an Atlanta Firefighter, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation aims to assist in times of loss or extreme injury by providing stipends to assist active personnel and families through periods of bereavement, hospitalization, or difficult times. The Injury and Bereavement Assistance Program provides one-time stipends to AFRD members or their families during times of crisis. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
